The 2008 IA Soapbox Derby and BBQ
Date: Saturday September 27, 2008. (Can be changed if deemed necessary)
Time: BBQ at 12 noon, Race(s) at 2 PM
Place: To be determined! Please PM me any ideas. Hoping for a central location near the perimeter.
The Event
Come join us for a friendly meet-and-greet with grilled burgers and dogs, cold beer and soda at 12 noon. At 2 PM, the race(s) will begin! Teams who wish to compete must build a vehicle to race in (more info below in the rules section). Grab those dusty bicycle wheels out of your basement, do some junkyard rummaging, bust out the old steering wheel you had before you got that baller Nardi and that stock seat you had before those sexy Recaros, whatever! Do whatever it takes to build a functional vehicle!
Everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of whether or not you are participating in the build and race. PM this page to all of your friends! Everyone is encouraged to come talk, have a good time, and watch the hilarity ensue as IA's finest compete for glory, bragging rights, and cool looking bruises. Be sure to bring your cameras and videocameras!
Please commit to bringing a food/drink item if you plan on attending. Indicate in this thread if you plan on attending and what you will bring to contribute to the BBQ - I'll keep a list in this original post. Even if you absolutely cant afford to bring some food for some reason, let me know that you'll be coming so I can keep a basic head count.
The Rules
Teams must consist of 10 members or fewer. Please abide by the honor system during the building phase!
Your team must build a single-manned vehicle to compete in the race.
No engines will be allowed, whatsoever! The car must be gravity-driven ONLY, as the race will be downhill. No pushing is allowed.
Your car MUST have functional steering and brakes - No exceptions. All cars will be examined before the race to make sure they meet this requirement.
You MUST have a helmet to wear - bicycle helmet, motorcycle helmet, football helmet - I don't care.
You may use any parts you'd like, automotive or otherwise.
No pre-made vehicles are allowed - you're not racing a rolling shell or a skateboard; You've gotta make it!
Shop sponsorship is encouraged, but please don't hire a shop to build your car. Metal fabrication, paint, and things of that nature are probably the factors that make the most sense as far as shop involvement is concerned.

The Prizes
Consolation prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, as well as the following categories: best overall car, riciest ride, best-dressed driver/team, and perhaps a few surprises. Don't expect anything fancy - we're just doing this to have some fun!
If you plan on competing, PLEASE PM me your team name, the name of all your team members, and their IA names as soon as possible! I will list these on this post so everyone knows who they're up against.
I'll add more details, rules, and more to this post as they come up.
